Urolithin A

Urolithin A (UA) is a metabolite produced by gut bacteria (microbiota) from ellagitannins, a compound found in several food products such as berries (raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, cloudberries), pomegranates, and walnuts. Because UA is not found in food, its production in an individual depends on the type of gut bacteria the person has. Also, because not every individual has the type of bacteria required for the transformation of ellagitannins in food to UA, supplementation is useful in some people. Many bacteria including Gordonibacter urolithinfaciens and Gordonibacter pamelaeae produce UA in the intestines, which is then absorbed into our bloodstream and distributed to cells.

Multiple studies, including clinical trials demonstrate that UA improves mitochondrial health. This boosting of MitoHealth provides numerous health benefits, including but not limited to the following:

  • Improvements in muscle strength.
  • Improvements in exercise performance.
  • Improvements in muscle endurance in older (60-90yrs) adults, which may prevent development of sarcopenia.
  • Slowing of skin ageing, with topical application.
  • May improve immune functions.
  • Suppresses postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Urolithin A is available from timelinenutrition.com as Mitopure products. It is also available in other outlets shown in the buttons below.

We recommend UA for boosting MitoHealth™ to achieve the benefits outlined above, especially as we age.
